Whether you need help getting through the workday without foot pain, or you are looking for some extra support to improve your physical performance out in the football field, a pair of custom orthotics that is precisely built for your needs may be the perfect solution to your problem

In fact, there’s a reason each of the 32 NFL teams across the nation has a Fitstation in their locker room for fitting cleats and producing personalized insoles and recovery slides. The Fitstation truly takes orthotic customization to a new level!

Here you will find everything you need to know about the Fitstation system, including what to expect from a fitting session. But first, let’s take a look at how custom orthotics can help treat and prevent foot and ankle pain.

The Benefits of Custom Orthotics

The way your feet and ankles move can certainly have an effect on the rest of your body. Misaligned structures and structural deformities in the feet can lead to knee, hip, and even back pain. And when it comes to biomechanical deficiencies, custom orthotics therapy is a great way to address these issues.

With the help of these versatile medical devices, many of our patientshave been able to successfully correct some of the most stubborn chronic foot and ankle conditions out there, including

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Neuromas
  • Medial tibial stress syndrome
  • Patellofemoral syndrome
  • ITB issues
  • Piriformis syndrome, and more.

A good pair of custom orthotics can even help reduce pelvic obliquity, improve lumbar positioning, and treat other spine-related issues by reducing rotary forces and improving muscle tension up the kinetic chain.

Patients who have relatively normal biomechanics can benefit from wearing custom orthotics, too. Consider patients who are excessively on their feet for work or athletics, or patients who have poor gait, neurologic deficits, postural weakness, or loss of fat padding in the heel or forefoot. Custom orthotics can mitigate those ground reaction forces and help with extra padding and support in areas of the foot that need it most.

But for custom orthotics to actually work, they must be built for your specific condition and unique foot structure. And as no two feet are the same, accuracy is key when it comes to building your very own pair. That’s where the Fitstation comes in.

The Benefits of Fitstation

Now, we’re not saying traditional methods of custom orthotics fitting don’t work. What we are saying is that there’s always room for improvement – and the Fitstation is a big improvement. What’s more, Austin Foot and Ankle Specialists is the only clinic in Central Texas with this technology!

Combined with the Go-4D technology, the Fitstation provides personalized insoles and slides, as well as custom total contact foot orthotics. The Fitstation system includes a 3D foot scanner, a pressure plate, and proprietary software, and creates superior custom orthotics compared to standard methods!

What You Can Expect from Fitstation at Our Office

Here’s how a fitting session works:

First, our patients will stand inside the scanner on a glass platform where 9 laser power cameras capture three-dimensional images of the foot up to the ankle. During the scan, the foot is then broken down into 10 distinct areasmeasuring each foot by length and width, arch height, and other biometric data. (The software is so sophisticated that it can pick up subtle differences between feet that a visual inspection cannot.

Next, patients will walk on the pressure plate to measure when each area of the foot strikes the floor, how long it stays there, and how much pressure goes through one area compared to another. This detailed information is gathered throughout the entire gait cycle, so it provides a real-time dynamic analysisnot just a static analysis.

Finally, the software will integrate the data from both devices to help us create a custom prescription. This can be adjusted, if necessary, based on our knowledge of you – your goals, needs, and lifestyle

Higher Quality, Less Waste

Custom orthotics built by the Fitstation are thinner and more lightweight than traditional orthotics manufactured by polypropylene. And its accuracy is truly unparalleled, which means the devices they produce are exactly what patients need to get back to living a pain-free lifestyle.

As added bonuses to the planet and simple efficiency, the orthotics are created using a 3D printer. Any excess material from creation can be recycled back into the printer for the next pair. And since the scan was fully digital and required no foam boxes to make casts, the amount of waste compared to traditional orthotics-creating methods is starkly less!
