Types of Sports Injuries

In essence, a sports injury is any type of painful problem that results from participating in athletic activity.

We know—that’s the obvious part. But what you may not be aware of is that these injuries can be divided into two categories:

Overuse Injury

This happens when the feet have been overworked and can no longer handle the strain. Repetitive motions and hard impacts, or simply changing or adding to your routine when your body is not prepared, can be enough to create a problem. Pain will usually increase over time when the injury is left untreated.

Traumatic Injury

This type of injury happens suddenly and creates immediate pain and damage to the foot or ankle. Loss of mobility or strength in the affected limb often takes place, making it difficult—or even impossible—to continue activities until you have healed.

No matter how your problem developed, you will need appropriate treatment to take care it. When left untreated, the injury may become worse and lead to long-term or permanent damage.

Though there are many different sports injuries you can suffer from, some of the most common injuries we treat at our office include:

Achilles Tendinitis

This happens when the Achilles tendon becomes inflamed or torn, or the tendon fibers themselves start to break down.

These can happen when a sudden impact cracks bone tissue, though lesser impacts that add up over time can result in the same.

This is a painful sprain in joint at the base of the big toe.

Prevent Sports Injuries

Most general guidelines for preventing foot and ankle sports injuries apply to all physical activities that may come to mind. From skiing to soccer, the rules as usually the same:

  • Wear shoes that are activity-appropriate, provide enough room for your toes, and provide proper cushioning and support for your feet.
  • Listen to your body – if it hurts, then you should stop what you are doing immediately and give our office a call.
  • You should always warm up and stretch before beginning activities.
  • Condition your muscles and work toward your desired intensity level slowly.
  • Replace worn out footwear, or footwear that is inadequate.
  • Use braces to prevent recurrent injuries.
