Shoe Allergies Are Nothing To Sneeze At

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports that over 50 million people who live in the U.S. are affected by allergies. Shoe allergies aren’t often on the top of the list when it comes to this topic. You’re more likely to think of environmental, drug, and food allergies as being the most prevalent. However, anything that comes into contact with your skin and lungs, or that can be consumed, can cause a reaction.

Why would you experience a shoe allergy, and what does it mean for your feet? Don’t worry, you won’t be resigned to a life of bare feet—it’s what’s on your shoes that matter. The actual reaction, known as “shoe dermatitis,” is typically caused by chemicals placed on the shoes during manufacturing and glues used to hold them together. Leather shoes, while great in many ways, are often the culprit due to products used in the process of tanning.

If a red, itchy rash with blisters forms on your feet, remain calm. Note which shoes you have been wearing most often and put those aside for a time. If you continue to suffer, call our office. A thorough exam will determine the best course of action. If an allergy is suspected, we may order testing to determine the cause. Other foot conditions can also cause itchy feet, so it’s always a good idea to let our foot experts determine the source of your discomfort.

If you are experiencing an allergy to shoes, you are not alone. Manufacturers are now producing hypoallergenic footwear that will leave your feet feeling fine. Knowing the symptoms of shoe allergies will help you respond right away if you see signs of dermatitis on your feet.
